***Norway and Mexico Require Growth with Fewer Carbon Emissions : FCH.

* This does not mean less economic development but rather, the path to prosperity
* Mexican President and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg decided to join forces Norway.

In a media statement attended by Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, the President added that the two countries have decided to join forces to ensure a better future for the new generations.

On the staircase of Miguel Alemán's House at the official Los Pinos residence, he explained that the Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg had expressed Norway’s desire to work closely with Mexico to achieve positive results at the next Conference of Parties, COP-16 on Climate Change to be held in Cancún, Quintana Roo.

“Both governments hail the decision by the United Nations Secretary General to form a top-level financial consultants’ group to explore the means of internationally mobilizing up to $100 billion USD annually until 2020 to combat climate change. This will undoubtedly help speed up global negotiations," he said.
The President and the Norwegian Prime Minister analyzed the complexity involved in reaching agreements and in particular, agreed that they must work actively this year on specific issues regarding the negotiation of forestry issues and thereby arrive at specific agreements on climate change.

He thanked the Norwegian Prime Minister for organizing the Oslo Conference on Climate Change and Forests to be held on May 28, to which Mexico has been invited. He said that this initiative will make it possible to pledge an initial amount of up to six million USD, to support projects for the reforestation and preservation of woods and forests.

He said that within this framework, Mexico also reached an agreement with Norway to formalize a bilateral cooperation instrument over the next few weeks to be able to participate actively in projects undertaken in this country.

He declared that the Oslo Conference in May will constitute a crucial step towards a successful outcome of the COP-16 in Cancún and reflects Norway’s leadership, under Prime Minister Stoltenberg, of environmental issues which are crucial to mankind.

We have also decided to boost our cooperation in energy issues, said President Calderón, adding that Mexico is interested in the experience of STATOIL HYDRO, a public firm owned by all Norwegians which has been modernized and made a major contribution to their country's economic growth.

President Calderón told the Norwegian Prime Minister of Mexico’s interest in expanding economic relations and of course of increasing cooperation between Petróleos Mexicanos and STATOIL, in addition to undertaking a detailed analysis of this firm's experience on the path to modernization.
